Dear American Friend:
I am at my computer, enjoying Google Earth, spinning around the planet, and thinking that America - our USA - is the last nation on the planet where freedom reigns in its full, stand-up-straight-and-feel-proud splendor. I am thinking, Reagan wisely pointed out, "Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction."
Reagan's claim is especially meaningful to me because I was born in a communist country - Bulgaria. As America is poised to take the path of 'redistribution of wealth,' I feel it is my duty to share with you a little of what I learned, from my up-close and personal experience with' redistribution of wealth.' Communism of 1945 and socialism of 2008 differ in terms of how they are initiated. The long-term lobotomy impact, on the value of freedom in the human psyche, is identical.
Freedom is most valuable because it empowers the psyche with decision-making power. Redistribution of wealth disables motivation. Big Brother government ultimately acts like a lobotomy on decision-making power and motivation, in the psyche. Socialism is a greater threat to America, the land of the free, than terrorism.
Promoting class division, promising redistribution of wealth and manipulation of information are, in practice, the distinguishing tactical weapons of opponents to freedom. Barack Obama uses standard, 'divide the rich and the poor' and 'promise riches to the poor' tactics of revolutionaries opposed to freedom. I can't recall past presidential campaigns that have so consistently divided Americans into rich and poor, those with mortgages and those with 7 houses, those with 1 car and those with 12 cars - "have and have not's." Clearly Obama values material possessions more than freedom. Obama sounds like a socialist revolutionary.
My dear American friend, let's first be clear regarding values. Capitalism values freedom, not money. Socialism values money, not freedom. Capitalism gives equal freedom and it is fueled by freedom. Socialism impedes individual decision-making and disables motivation, in exchange for 'equal,' 'guaranteed' money 'benefits'. Socialism doesn't work because, while freedom is a self-replenishing energy, money is not. Socialist redistribution of wealth and the accompanying impediments to individual decision-making produce disabled motivation, which in turn results in equal poverty for all. Following the end of the Cold War, we saw that what was hiding behind the Iron Curtain was poverty! Big Brother government produces poor nations everywhere on the planet.
Freedom is more valuable than money. As incredible as it may sound to an American, in Bulgaria, as soon as the communists came in to power, they enacted a law and, like magic, they took our bank money, our homes and our work. Fifty years ago, the media was limited to daily press and evening radio. Communism could not instantly infiltrate and manipulate the psyche. The communist tyrants could take our material wealth but they could not take our values. My parents left family, friends and everything familiar, to start everything, from the beginning, in America, the land of the free. We did not come to America expecting anyone to give us wealth. We came to America for the freedom to make wealth.
While freedom empowers people with decision making power, information determines the quality and character of decision-making. During past Presidential elections, I recall FCC regulations regarding equal time, fairness and objectivity. If America were to elect Obama as President, in 2008, socialism, combined with a powerful 4th estate -- multi-dimensional media that is overwhelmingly monolithic, lacking any regulatory standards of fairness and objectivity, that pours 'selective information' into the psyches of Americans, at 24/7 dosage -- is a greater threat to our land of the free, than any invading army can ever be.
Reagan also pointed out that those who have known freedom and lost it have never known it again. After 500 years of cruel Turkish tyranny, once Bulgarians gained their freedom in 1878, in one lifetime, both of my grandfathers were able to grow from village poor to wealthy city leaders. However, after only 50 years of communist tyranny, 20 years after gaining their freedom, the average Bulgarian still focuses on what wealth the government is going to give. Twenty years of 'freedom' have passed and the average Bulgarian is like a prisoner jailed for 50 years, now free, but he still paces the boundaries of a prison cell that is no longer there. Reagan may be right and freedom lobotomies may be permanent.
Democrats will do well to ask themselves how Obama's promises, of what his administration will give to the have-not's, stacks up alongside JFK's, "And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country." Obama is no Kennedy!
In 1992, Clinton won the Presidential election using the phrase, "It's the economy, stupid!" On November 4, 2008, my dear American friend, think and refuse to be tricked into trading our valuable crown of freedom for a few free silver coins. Let us honor our Founding Fathers, stand-up straight and proud, and reconfirm, to every freedom-loving human on the planet, that in America, the land of the free, "It's the freedom, baby!"
Best wishes,
Your Bulgarian–Greek–American friend
P.S. We can do it! America averted the Cuban Missile Crisis in 13 days. Hopefully, the threat of an Obama presidency, the most serious threat to the land of the free since the Cuban Missile Crisis, can also be averted in the numbered days that remain!
